Final Field Announced for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship
Els, Ames, Alker, Harrington and more fill the field for the PGA TOUR Champions season finale at Phoenix Country Club
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The final field has been set for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club, where 35 of the top 36 players of the 2024 PGA TOUR Champions season will compete to win both the 35th annual tournament title and the season-long Charles Schwab Cup race.
World Golf Hall of Fame member Ernie Els looks to capture his first-ever Charles Schwab Cup. Els enters the week No. 1 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, a position he’s held for the past 12 events. This season saw him earn three victories, including his first senior major championship, while recording four other top-three finishes and 10 top-10s on the year. Els holds a narrow lead in the standings over No. 2 Steven Alker, the 2022 Charles Schwab Cup winner. Alker won the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai and has registered four runner-up finishes on the Year.
Charles Schwab Cup No. 3 Stephen Ames added three more victories to his resume this season, including defending his title at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic.
Pádraig Harrington - who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame this summer – is currently fourth in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. Harrington matched Els and Ames with three victories on the season, including a win at the second Charles Schwab Cup playoff event, the inaugural Simmons Bank Championship. Harrington won the DICK’S Open for the third straight year, becoming the first player to win the same PGA TOUR Champions event in three consecutive seasons since World Golf Hall of Fame member Bernhard Langer at the Kaulig Companies Championship (2014-16).
Joining the top four in the group of players teeing it up in Phoenix are Korea’s Y.E. Yang (fifth in the points standings) and Australia’s Richard Green (sixth in the points standings). Yang earned his first PGA TOUR Champions win at the Ascension Charity Classic while Green is still in search of his first victory.
Other notable names in the field include Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Jerry Kelly, who’s battled Rheumatoid arthritis and earned his 12th Champions Tour victory at the SAS Championship, World Golf Hall of Famer and six-time Charles Schwab Cup winner Bernhard Langer, along with World Golf Hall of Famer Retief Goosen and Darren Clarke, winner of the 2022 Senior Open presented by Rolex.
In addition, there are three other first-time winners making their Charles Schwab Cup Championship debut: Ricardo Gonzalez (Trophy Hassan II), Stewart Cink (The Ally Challenge) and Tim O’Neal (Dominion Energy Charity Classic).
